I guess I never stopped to think that Obama (or other black government officials) could be role models for the youth. I was more focused on the potential change they could bring. But I hope it does inspire some change in the bad ass generation X whose parents need to use a belt more often. And Knowledge is Power.. I believe that!

Great post..I like most people know that Bush really did a bang-up job with America, but I do give credit where it's due. Collin Powell alon, did alot of great things for America, and for Black people in general. it's a shame that he had to get played in ublic though. I'm gald that all of them paved the way for more African Americans in government, the more the better even if we have to go through a couple Kwame Kilpatrick's.

I did NOT mean to put, "the father is THEIR leading" OH NO!
Anyway, you make a great point Tobias! Token or not, they are paving the way somehow. Now, I don't know if I can work with the two getting a minority into the presidency............not sure about that one.

These are the comments I enjoy. Both give good honest opinions. To the point of them being token, they could definitely be seen as tokens. I would argue the position does mean a little more than just a title. If we applied that logic to other fields, would accomplishments mean less? Does Hattie McDaniels' Oscar mean less because she got it playing Mammy?

By no means should we accept crumbs from someone else's table but the unforseen by-products of political strategies could produce new avenues for advancement? If Condi and Colin help get a minority into the presidency even if indirectly, then I can work with it.

See, I can't give credit to Bush for anything like that. If you want to give credit to anyone, give it up for Clinton who had more black faces around him than any other president before and after.

The difference is not just in the position that people held/hold but the amount of contribution they were allowed to give. The question becomes an issue of relevance. Do you have relevant African Americans or just more tokens? Truth of the matter is that Condi Rice is a token. Colin Powell was a token. They had very little influence on anything Bush does. I think Colin Powell understood that which is why he left. If I remember correctly, he also spoke out against the war.

My point is that African American people are very proud. We don't like bullshit. And, we look down on people who shovel that bullshit. Condi Rice may not be the one shoveling it directly, but she's responsible for allowing Bush to make bullshit look good. So, no, i don't have much respect for people who sell their souls for a little bit of position.

I'd rather have died waiting for an African American person in the top levels of government than give a patsy like Condi Rice any respect for allowing herself to be used by the Bush Administration to garner black support.

Abraham Lincoln used African Americans much like Bush uses Condi Rice and people still think the Civil War was about freeing slaves.

<i>"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that...."</i> - the REAL Abraham Lincoln

Give Bush credit for what he did, not for what it looks like he did.

Tobias, I truly appreciate this post!
I don't think that many people want to give Rice and Powell their credit due - maybe b/c of the party they are associated with.

If it weren't for Bush and these last 8 years, do you really think that Obama would have a chance? Really? Even though Bush didn't do much, I actually feel sorry for the man. There had to be someone in office to mess up so bad that people actually embrace a black man. PEOPLE DON'T GET IT TWISTED - racism will never go away, SOME people who would've have never gone democratic and probably never would've thought this day would come are voting for Obama b/c their pockets have been touched - they have no other option if they want change. This is really bigger than Bush!

I appreciate Obama - I appreciate him b/c he's not your typical african american image. He actually offers another route that many youth don't see on a daily basis and how it actually is good and honorable. I also love the fact that his marriage/family seems in tact. The father is their leading, while the mother is his support and they are there for their children. I'm sure they have their problems, who doesn't - but it's a good thing that they keep that private - it should be. I also appreciate him b/c I think he's sincere and not just about change for blacks, but for everyone.

Please people get out and vote - this is historical and actually what has been spoken into existence from many years ago - check out Dr. Martin Luther King's speech "I have a Dream" and REALLY listen to it!
