All That Glitters Ain’t Gold

(BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T STILL HAVE GOLD)
I’m struggling. I’ll admit it. I have wanted to write on this particular subject for quite some time. Yet I’ve been hesitant because of my past experiences in conversation. It seems to take forever for people to truly understand my point. Most write it off as hating, which is something I should never be accused of. Icky handles all of that for the group anyway. See, the line between hating and realism can be blurry. I always encourage people to go hard for their dreams. Accept no roadblocks, look past all hurdles, and crush all obstacles. Chase after your dream, just don’t lose yourself in the process. Don’t let the lure of your dream, or what someone else has, become your identity. If you do, you run the risk of getting stranded in a personal desert and your dream becomes a mirage that manifests around anything that resembles water. (I almost sounded like I could write there huh?)
I, at one time, was one of those “make you sick” positive people. I chose my words too carefully, for fear of discouraging people. I held back my views if I felt they went against what someone wanted to pursue. In turn, I became the gullible one. In trying to support others I found myself chasing anything that sounded or looked good. I was a moth who couldn’t turn away from anything that shined in my eyes. I was almost afraid to dislike something. So, please don’t think I’m sitting here looking down on anyone. I know how easy it can be to want something so much, you see it in your sleep.
However, the grass sometimes just looks greener. Things always look better on the outside. Something you don’t have will always be tempting. I will never be one to tell anyone they shouldn’t go after what they want. What I will say is, “Why do you want that?” “Is that what you really want?” “Is what you want just something you want because you don’t have it?” Personal motivations will always be just that. Personal. However you answer those questions is up to you. Just answer them.
We have no idea what’s going on in someone’s head or life at any given time. I’m not saying that it’s impossible; but when you see someone shining that doesn’t guarantee that they are joyful. Rims don’t equal a peaceful mind. Ice won’t help you sleep at night. Money doesn’t always mean that you know love. If these are your goals then more power to you. But the next time that glitter catches your eye, remember that it might not be gold and even if it is it still might not be the answer.
“Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need…You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your fucking khakis.”–Tyler Durden (Fight Club 1999)

But “Diamonds are forever (forever, forever) - throw your diamonds in the sky if ya feelin’ the vibe” didn’t Kanye and Sierra Leone tell you that??? LOL - sorry, that’s the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this.
“If you do, you run the risk of getting stranded in a personal desert and your dream becomes a mirage that manifests around anything that resembles water.” DDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
and the POOKIE AWARD goes to Seymour monet - that almost made me want to be your blog groupie!
It’s all in what people value. And like you said, it’s a personal matter - what works for you may not work or be of value to someone else. However; when you see that people place their value in things that will dwindle away, it actually makes you sorry for them. People have to find their own way - encouragement and guidance helps, but ultimately, it’s in people’s own personal timing and experience.
Great post!
